[IIFT/XAT/TISS/ACIO/AO - GK] India's Defence : Missiles,Weapons and Vehicles - 1

Missiles, Weapons and Vehicles play a vital role in strengthening India's national security and defense preparedness. This section is very important and it is expected from us to remember the names of  the important ones if not all of them.

Let's us give it a shot.

I hope you all must have watched ,if not read, Mahabharata and Ramayana on TV at least once in your life time. So let's try and relate the stories from these Epics to memorize the names of different
Missiles,Weapons and Vehicles.

Q. What is Agni ?

A. Surface to Surface Missile from DRDO.

First have a look at the image given below:

As you all know, Sita was abducted by Ravana while she was accompanying Rama during his 14 years of exile.Thereafter Rama killed Vali to get the support of Sugriv and his वानर sena who assisted him to attack Lanka and rescue Sita from the clutches of Ravana.





Panchavati, near Nasik (Maharashtra) is the place from where Sita was Kidnapped.

Twist in the Tale :

Rama decided not to move from Panchavati at all and solve everyone's problem from there itself.

But How ?

Isn't Obvious, using Agni-1,2,3,4,5 .

First he decided to kill Vali who was the ruler of Kishkindha(Vijaynagar, Karnataka) and prevent Surgiv from his atrocities.
Distance between Nasik and Vijayanagar is between 700-800 only. Thus Rama used Agni-1to kill Vali (Short Range Ballistic Missile [SRBM]

His next target was the Trio of Kumbhakarna, Meghnada and  Ravana whom he kills with Agni-2,Agni-3 and Agni-4 respectively.[MRBM]

The disyance between Nasik and Srilanka is about 2200 Km and the ranges of Agni-2,Agni-3 and Agni-4 are 2000,3000 and 4000 respectively.

Meanwhile, Rama also decided to help people in a distant continent.They were being tortured by an evil wizard, Lord Voldemort. To kill him he needed an intercontinental missile and thus he used Agni-5, the first Intercontinental ballistic missile [ICBM] of our country.

Ravana was a big devotee of Lord Shiva and he wanted Shiva to come and live in Lanka itself as he knew that in Shiva's presence 'उसका कोई बाल  भी बांका  नहीं कर सकता था '.

Twist in the tale : [मनगढंत ]

When Ravan reached Kailas he found Shiva in deep meditation and despite numerous attempts , Shiva did not open his eyes. Ravana seized the oppurtunity and liffted a Shiva-linga kept over there to carry it to Lanka to gain the strength that he needed.

He placed the Linga on Phuspak Viman [Aircraft] and flew in the air. When Shiva found this out he was furious and sent his Trishul [ Surface to Air Missile] to destroy Pushpak Viman but Trishul is more useful in tackling low-flying enemies.

He asked his son Kartikeya to fly on his Peacock [Kartikeya's Aircraft] and use Astra [Air to Air Missile] to attack Pusphak Viman but Kartikeya also missed the shot.

Now, Ganesha fired his Akash [Surface to Air Missile] which was more capable than Trishul in tackling High-Flying enemy Aircrafts and prevented the Shiva-linga to be carried to Lanka.

Note:Efficency of Akash is more than Trishul in tackling High-Flying Aircrafts.

Prithvi

Prithvi = Earth(surface). Thus Prithvi is also a Surface to Surface short range missile.

Prithvi 1,2,3 Range = 150 km,250 km and 350 km respectively

Dhanush  is the naval variant of Prithvi 2.

Brahmos:

Fastest SuperSonic Cruise Missile in the world (which makes it unique like 'ब्रह्मास्त्र ').

Joint Venture between India and Russia

Arjuna: In the epic Mahabharata, just before the war Arjuna and Duryodhana went to Krishna
for his help/support.

Duryodhana asked for Narayani sena [ Fleet of Tanks]

While Arjuna realised that he himself can tackle any number of tanks easily and he asked for Krishna himself to guide and counsel him during the War.

Thus Arjuna is the main battle Tank.[Again refer the image]

Twist in the Tale :

Naga:

While Shiva was patrolling over Kurukshetra he saw Duryodhana's tanks brutally attacking Sahdev.

He did not like it.Not one bit.

So he released his Naga [Anti-tank destroyer] in the Battle City [ I hope you all must have played] and his Naga destroyed all the tanks.

Pinaka :

Pinaka is the name of bow of Shiva himself making it more like a Multi-Barrel rocket system.

Therefore , the Universe bows to Lord Shiva, I bow to Lord Shiva.
