[Technology]-Internet of Everything

Although this topic is not very new and also not that important for any objective exam yet I found it very interesting and wanted to share with you all .

So Before I start lets look at the evolution of Internet :

1960's - Experiments about Computer to Computer Communication Systems to facilitate exchange of information without much bothering about time and distance

Thereafter , Internet has evolved at an exceptional speed.About 5 Billion People are connected to Internet. This can be attributed due to the increase in number of objects that can connect to the Web.

But what if ?

Physical things like your Chair,Tooth-Brush,मन्दिर का घंटा and even you yourself are also connected to the Internet.

There comes the idea of 'Internet of Everything'.You can observe as well as control the Physical things which are connected to the Internet. The interaction between You and the physical things around you or even distant from you gets extremely enormous.

According to an research about 30 Billion devices would be connected to each other by 2020.

Now imagine the following scenarios :

Your girlfriend buys a dress and it is connected to the internet and via Facebook you like it which gets displayed on that dress.

OR

Striking Chimes (घंटा बजाना ) at a distant temple is just a click away.

But how ?

1. The Physical devices must be provided both sensory(to sense) as well as actuation(to control) capabilities.[Embedded Computing devices,Microsensors, RFID etc]

2. You need to give them a unique Identity. That can be facilitated by IP addressing but the limited address space for IPv4 requires us to use IPv6 to address so many devices.

What is an IP Address ?

IP Address is a numeral assigned to a device(Computer,Printer,Mobile) within a computer network and it helps to identify where that device is while communication.

3. The devices must be capable to connect to the Internet.[Use of low power embedded wireless radios,WIFI etc. can be used]

What can we do with it ?

1. We can Interact with Objects

Look at the image above. Gabbar has taken Viru as hostage and is threatening Jai that he may kill him but their guns are now connected to the Internet and Sambha can see on his Mobile device that there are no bullets in Gabbar's Gun.He betrays Gabbar and tells Jai about it and Jai finally gets to shoot Gabbar.

2. We can monitor things

Since Jai doesn't die at the end, he and Thakur's Bahu decide to marry. Thakur could not take it and gets a Heart Attack but Thakur's heart is also connected to the Internet which intimates Jai that Thakur has got a Heart attack . Also hospital authorities get a similar intimation and they immediately send an ambulance to Thakur's house.

3. We can search physical things on Google

You can search your misplaced keys, spectacles etc by searching on google.Women can keep track of their Husbands just by typing 'Where is my Husband' ? [ Isn't a Hit Idea ? ]

4. More Importantly we can manage Cities, Electricity, Supply-Chain,Water Resources everything via Internet leading to reduction in costs and wastage of resources.Sustainable Development everywhere.:)

So will 2050 = Utopia [अच्छे दिन ] ?

There is a term 'Panopticon' which refers to a building where a single watchman gets to observe the inmates of that building and those inmates are not even aware of it.

This might happen to us as well. Privacy खल्लास !

Also there is a big threat from Hackers :

Suppose,Thakur gets a WIFI enabled pacemaker installed in his heart but then to avenge Gabbar's death Kalia hacks it and stops it.

No need for Bollywood Side Villains to disguise themselves as doctors and turn off ventilator of the चश्मदीद गवाह admitted in a hospital. All they need is to type Ctrl + End from .

EU's Cyber Crime Dept. has already said that first Online murder can happen by 2014 end.

Also, The assumption that IoE would help to manage things efficiently may turn out to be just opposite and there is extreme Chaos everywhere. In the terms of तमराज किल्विष - 'घोर अँधेरा ' !

कहना क्या चाहते हो ?

The thing is whether we like this idea of IoE or not, It is happening anyway and the onus lies on us to be collectively responsible and use it in constructive endeavors.

Happy Learning :)

PS: This is just a filler article as currently my health is down so couldn't concentrate and write on complex issues.
